Last August, I traveled to Small Town, Ohio to produce a story about a high school softball player named Ember.
Ember isn’t especially fast, coordinated, or strong. She’s hit exactly zero home runs in her life. She IS an expert in Greek mythology. She adores her pet boa constrictors, Violet and Kapok.
In 2022, Ember was the ONLY trans girl in all of Ohio approved to play high school sports. Teammates, coaches, and parents didn’t seem to care. Or even really notice.
When proposals to ban trans athletes started flopping around the state legislature floor, it felt personal…So Ember set out to correct the record.
Is she stealing the trophies and scholarships? Or “becoming trans” to get into an Ivy League? Or getting taxpayer-funded surgery?
No. She just wants to warm the bench in peace.
